Eshrat Erfanian’s series of photographs The 4th and 5th Edition (2015) is a series of 16 digital prints of residential neighborhoods in Teheran from satellite views gleaned from Google Earth Pro, zoomed in on and intervened with by the use of 24K gold leaf. In these series, Erfanian pursues her ongoing exploration on the implications of the normalization of new visual imagery facilitated by technology and its ties to the military apparatus and capitalism, the ontological and political status of images of war and globalization, the reshaping of subjectivity by new technologies, and the question: What do new technologies render legible and what do they make invisible?
