With this exhibition, Erfanian has produced works, which represent the symbolic landscape of the Northern Ontario as a site infused with both idealism and disenchantment, a landscape haunted by specific histories of both upheaval and prosperity. These beautiful images like her previous work are accompanied by text which significantly transforms them producing images of melancholy aftermath, and pays homage to Andrey Tarkovsky’s shots of polluted and abandoned industrial landscape in “Stalker”.
This series of 15 digital photographs depict the landscape that Erfanian Shot in and around the Northern Ontario and Quebec provinces. In recent history this landscape was associated with the mining industries in the late 50’s and particularly famous for its sources of uranium but now in a process of being transformed to a site of reclusive retirement paradise. Through pairing these images with addresses of oil refineries in The Middle East, Erfanian continues her exploration of the effect of text on image, and the re-examination of the sublime migration of Capital and manufacturing around the world.
